Fox Chase Cancer Center opens at St. Francis Hospital

Officials from St. Francis Medical Center and Philadelphia-based Fox Chase Cancer Center announced the opening of Fox Chase Cancer Center at the hospital on March 12. The center is the second to receive the Fox Chase Cancer Center designation in New Jersey.

In addition to clinical trials already available through St. Francis's existing relationship with Fox Chase, the center will offer on-site second opinions by a Fox Chase-Philadelphia physician. Plans are underway for a new, state-of-the-art radiation therapy facility with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and brachytherapy.

According to Judith Persichilli, president and chief operating officer of St. Francis Medical Center, "comprehensive cancer center" is the highest designation that the National Cancer Institute bestows. Only 41 centers in the U.S. currently hold such status.

"Twelve years ago, St. Francis Medical Center affiliated with Fox Chase Cancer Center because we had mutual goals-to provide the most advanced cancer-care available to people in the community," said Persichilli. "Today, we are renewing our relationship with Fox Chase to further that vision through research, technology and compassionate patient care."

ARTWORKS to show the works of local children

ARTWORKS, the visual arts school of Trenton, is presenting "KIDSART," March 17 through April 5. The exhibition features artwork from Trenton 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students from Cadwalader and P.J. Hill Elementary Schools in the Learning Through Art Education Outreach program. ARTWORKS welcomed visitors to a public reception on Sunday, March 17 in the ARTWORKS gallery, located in downtown Trenton on Stockton Street (across from the DMV).

ARTWORKS' Learning Through Art (LTA) program is conducted with the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York City. In the program's fifth year, local artists continue to work with classroom teachers in the Trenton schools to reinforce core-curriculum concepts through visual art experiences. After the students' work is exhibited at ARTWORKS, selected work will go to the Guggenheim Museum for a special children's exhibit. Later in the school year, the Trenton students will visit the Guggenheim to see their work hanging among other student's work from New York City, Mexico and Spain.

Conduit celebrates six-month anniversary with neon sign

The finishing touches were placed on Conduit March 11, when owners John Hatch, David Henderson and Roland Pott erected their new, "modern-retro" 20-foot by 4-foot two-sided neon sign in front of the club. March marks the six-month anniversary of Conduit's grand opening.

The sign adds a welcome distinctive look to Conduit, which had previously lacked any grand exterior signage. George Zienowicz, of Zienowicz Signs, in Trenton, created the sign. According to Henderson, Mr. Zienowicz's creativity with neon and graphics in general was a deciding factor in choosing the vendor.

"Whenever possible, we try to go with local artists and businesses, and he's a couple blocks away in the arena-arts district of Trenton," said Mr. Henderson.

Mr. Zienowicz is also an electric and acoustic fiddle player in the Celtic band, na' Bodach, which recently performed with Black 47 and the Dipsomaniacs at Conduit.
